hot house (and flowers!)

Wednesday, July 7th, 2010

It is still very hot out. And in. We broke down and put the window AC unit in our bedroom upstairs last night. It was so weird sleeping in a cool cave while the rest of our house was roasting.

I have a soy candle in our bathroom, and it is literally liquifying! This morning I had about a 4-minute window between the time I stepped out of the shower and when I was completely drenched in sweat again. Craig cursed me for being able to wear skirts and dresses to work. I told him he should just go for it already. Comfort counts. And who really bloody cares when you’re sitting in a cube for most of the day. Skirts and dresses rule!

So, I came home tonight to a teensy bit less heat in the house, but still pretty toasty. Apparently our house really likes to be 92°F inside.
92°F

I spent a long time wandering about outside again to try to take in the slightly cooler outside temp (89°F!) I found some sort of silly short nightgown getup that I’ve never worn before, but surely I have no issues prancing around the yard in it so that my sweat is buffered by the thinnest layer of cool silk upon my sticky skin. My neighbors must truly wonder about me.

Once again, it is hot and I don’t caaaaaaaaaaaaaaare!

While my sanity has taken a noticeable dive, luckily our garden is still holding up in this heat. There are all sorts of fun things going on.

green romas

Our romas are staked and getting bigger every day. Still green. Can’t wait for them to ripen!

flowering cilantro

I can’t keep up with the cilantro. But the dainty white flowers are quite pretty!

baby green beans

Here are baby green beans starting to grow!

tiny cucumber

Even more adorable is the tiny beginnings of a cucumber! Hee hee... a little prickly unit.

crowded carrots

The carrot patch is coming along quite well. Totally getting boxed out by the bolting broccoli rabe. I need to yank the rabe out. It’s time.

watermelon and green beans

Like your partner stretching in his sleep and taking over the entire width of the bed, the watermelon vines just keep spreading out and are quickly encroaching on the bush lake beans who are clinging to the garden bed edge.

And now, drumroll please…

first zinnia

Last but not least.... I did it!!! This is the very first flower that I’ve ever grown from seed. It is a zinnia. And it is starting to bloom! With more buds all over the garden! Victory is mine!
