signs of fall outside and inside

The heat is on! I can’t help myself. When I get home from work it is just about dark. Geese are flying away in their tell-tale formation overhead. There is an Autumn chill in the air. So it is comforting to get home from work and peel off the work clothes, throw on the comfies, put a turtle fur on my head, and turn on the heat just enough to take the chill out.

But it’s not all doom and gloom yet. We haven’t had a hard frost, but it is surely coming. Until then, my zinnias are still humming along bravely, one of the last vestiges of summer and blooming abundance.

zinnias

I will be so sad to see these zinnias go. Of all the flowers I attempted to plant from seed this year, the zinnias were far and away my biggest triumph. When the chipmunks dug up my sunflower seeds and sprouts, I thought all was lost. When my asters never appeared I muttered expletives. But these zinnias have prevailed and are still budding!

Meanwhile, inside we are slowing it down. It is all about fall and nesting.
fall centerpiece

Our dining room table centerpiece is adorned with baby acorn squashes, butternut squashes, baby pumpkins, and a delicious-smelling pumpkin pecan soy candle. Gets me in the mood to make soup, curl up on the couch with a good book, and simply relax.

I feel relaxed already! and starting to get used to this whole fall idea :D So sorry about your sunflowers and asters, but I share your enthusiasm, Zinnias are fantastic! I tried 4 varieties from seed this year for the first time. Better than any butterfly garden and YES, they’re STILL growing after 2 frosts. Which varieties did you sow? Theyre very pretty!

Hi Trisha! Wow, I guess I didn’t realize that zinnias are so hardy! I actually don’t know for sure what varieties mine are. They came in one of those mixed zinnia seed packets. This was my first year growing flowers from seed, too, so I just grabbed a packet and went for it. Perhaps this may be why my asters and sunflowers didn’t make it. :) Thank you for stopping by gardensofplenty, and I hope you’ll keep reading! I’m looking forward to following you along on cultivatorscorner.com. LOVE your site design.
