ain’t no one jealous of my trellis

I have never professed to have a neat garden. In fact, you can see a photo here of my wild and crazy raised bed from last year. However, I am trying my best to contain the sprawl and keep my garden tidy and prosperous.

So far, it’s been trial and error.

This year it started with my sugar snap peas. They are getting taller and taller, and I know that I have to figure out some way to get them to trellis.

They develop these crazy spindly arms that reach out and wind around
anything and everything they can get their little hands on.

Last year I didn’t trellis at all, and well, they kind of grew into each other and started fighting with their tightly woven spindly arms choking each other. Bad. Bad. Bad. And as a result, I really didn’t get all that many sugar snap peas. So I vowed this year would be different.

However, a garden trellis can be a pretty spendy purchase. And making a homemade one seemed so much “easier”. Or so I thought until I concocted this God-awful mess:

Hello, satanic-looking eyesore!

I had the best of intentions, really. I have a bunch of bamboo stakes on hand, and I figured I’d just make a trellis from garden twine. Yeah, except that the lines of twine wouldn’t stay taut, and it all just started to cave in on itself as I added more and more twine. After staring at my mess in dismay for two days, I broke down and bought a very inexpensive trellis from Big Lots. Here’s what $4 gets you:

Now my sugar snap pea plants can keep their grabby little hands off of each other (hopefully) and grab onto the trellis.

Sometimes it’s tough work keepin’ the peace in the garden.
